“Aunt Annie’s” Welcoming Porch

“Aunt Annie’s” Welcoming Porch

Look, its Grandpa Ken relaxing on the Annie’s shady porch. He is sucking up the pleasure, like my garden in the rain after a two-week draught. The big bowl of delicious cheese is calling his name. Fresh, squeaky cheese curds and string cheese always tastes better with a backdrop of busy kids petting barking dogs and purring cats.
Melonhead, the squawking parrot, decides to make his presence known. Sprung from his Navaho blanket-covered cage, he enjoys
his brief freedom by clawing his way around Grandpa’s head. Looks like Melonhead has a mustache addiction.
The welcoming porch is just an hors d’oeurve preparing us for the main course, the inside of Aunt Annie’s cabin itself. Watch out great room, here we come!
As we enter the serene sound of geese honking overhead welcome us. Even in its largesse that big room is calmly welcoming. The enormous log beams, too large for Grammy to get her arms around, stand guard in all their majestic beauty, power, and strength. They frame the spectacular stone fireplace, quite honored to hold the reigns of a stellar hand-carved horse. He prances in full glory high above the homey great room below. Loving his new home in the woods, this former city steed knows he is lucky. Luxuriating in his new lofty perch he views the brilliant turquoise pond through the window. He also naughtily neighs at the sight of Aunt Annie’s makeshift horse corral. This bears some further explaining.

Memories of Duncan White, our perennially naughty (understatement) pure white cockatoo flash across my dendrites. Now there was one huge, gorgeous, too aggressive bird. He was really a fair-feathered friend.

Only Grandpa Ken could lovingly handle his mighty beak. His wayward ratchet jaws left scars on every piece of wooden furniture in our house. Oh, he was so spoiled! Duncan White used to love hitching a ride on our dog Rocky’s back. This scared the hell out of poor Rocky, who was never known to wear “courageous” on his dog tags. Not that he ever needed to.

Ahh, the joys of remembering our past “friends” from the animal kingdom.Meanwhile, Gracie and Faye are enjoying the sight of Melonhead parading around on Grandpa Ken. “Aunt Annie’s” porch is soon filled with delicious laughter and squawking.

What kid, OK, even us big kids, wouldn’t want to spend a heavenly day sitting on the porch of a real log cabin? Decorated with chain saws, art objects and antiques, that porch was uniquely yelling. “Come sit a spell!” And what’s that over there in that big tall glass terrarium? No bull ;) …there was a green-bellied bull frog sitting there in all his princely glory. He watches the kiddie capers with nonchalance, as if he were treated to this spectacle everyday.

Darling dogs and cuddly cats, coming and going, waiting to be petted. No schleppers, their steady, hungry string cheese and cheese curds stares net many handouts. The welcoming porch is just an hors d’oeurve preparing us for the main course, the inside of Aunt Annie’s cabin itself. Watch out great room, here we come!
