Savoring Mom’s Sage Wisdom

Happy Thanksgiving! Bountiful blessings from my home to yours.
We had a very small family – just my sister (age 4) and me (age 3). My mom’s farmer parents were usually the ones who joyfully shared our best and most anticipated meal of the year. Thanksgiving!
Mom’s sage stuffing was my favorite. I was starving and the red light was about to turn green. I was all set to run straight to that delectable food-laden table when the door bell rang.
It was my other grandfather who I rarely got to see, He was an orator and usually away delivering some speech.
My Grandfather waltzed in carrying a big flounder fish and presented it to my mom to cook. “Don’t forget the onions!”
My mom has always been a wise gal and one of the kindest, most accommodating ladies gracing God’s green earth. Even though the turkey was on the table, she scrambled off to the kitchen and fixed that flounder. She was so grateful that my grandfather was there with us that she didn’t mind the extra work.
Meanwhile, I got to feel important. I was to stand guard on that huge dish of stuffing next to Tom Turkey on the table. Stumper Bob, our feisty cat, was eyeballing it. I double-dared him not to even think about jumping up on that table as he had done so many times in the past.
He behaved for awhile, licking his chops, nervously reminding me that he wanted to feel thankful, too. But I let down my guard and there he was sneaking up on Tom Turkey. Grandfather scooped him up and saved our meal.
Fish and turkey? But guess what….mom’s sage stuffing tasted just as grand and the memories we made were delightful!
