Serendipitous Moments Create Sparkling Memories

Lynn and Judy at long last!

Ever have one of those surprise, life-changing moments that falls gently into your lap? Like sweet, fragrant rose pedals, it elegantly lands upon your being.

I did yesterday when my friend from afar, Lynn, who I have never met, walked through my door here in Puerto Vallarta.

On the spur of the moment, she had an opportunity to stay several nights in her favorite respite, Yelapa, a chopping, soggy hour boat ride from here. She needed a place to put her head for one night before she returned to the States.

Serendipity! I was so excited. My curiosity strength kicked in. I was like a child at Christmas waiting for my gift to arrive. With my positive psychology gratitude strength champing at the bit, I recognized how fortunate I was. My many-year wish was soon to be granted.

And to add zest (yes, that’s another strength), my best, still rambunctiously humorous childhood friend, Cheryl, and her ultra-cool daughter, Shelby, were here from Delaware. We would really have a PJ party to remember. Hot dog!

I went to my favorite fisherman and bought 4 lbs. of jumbo shrimp caught a few hours earlier. We gals pitched in and made cerviche, egg salad, baked reuben spirals and guacamole. We readied the creamed cheese, pepper relish, WI cheeses, and tostados. Yummy!

But let me backtrack and serve you our fun history.

Years ago, when I did my nationally syndicated radio show out of Chicago, my Indianapolis award-winning producer, Jon Quick, introduced me via phone and Internet to his friend, Lynn. He said we had a lot in common. What a compliment.

An author and internationally recognized Ph.D. educator among her many other titles, Lynn shines most brightly as a terrifically kind, empathetic woman. Her brains alone could man the space program, but it is her gentle voice and charmingly kind charisma always make me want more of her. Lithe and graceful as a swan, her metaphors and winning wit have made her emails slide down my psyche like smooth, bubbly champagne. A woman-to-woman, welcomed life respite.

Perhaps that’s why we made our pact. A promise to ourselves.

Someday, we’d hug on my terrace overlooking beautiful Banderas Bay and the sparkling Pacific. We’d lift Waterford crystal glasses, salute our friendship, and savor champagne.

But years went on. Life unfolded. We always kept in touch, but no plans were on the horizon.

Until last night.

OK, so I don’t have Waterford crystal. We made do. We toasted, talked, laughed, mused about our futures and let the world go by.

Our music? The waves crashing upon the shores below. Our light? The full moon hanging in the sky, welcoming this serendipitous occasion.

In years to come, we will smile and remember.

May I give you a challenge?

  • Think back on a time of your life that you got to play, savor, and get into fun flow.
  • Close your eyes and be mindful. Let your mind roam free.
  • Remember your joy. Sigh. Smile. Sit into it.

Instant positive psychology in awesome, gentle action. And Lynn, thanks for the exquisite memory.

I am humbled and honored that my dear friend “Dr. Judy” and another dear friend Lynn Keegan, Ph.D., finally met. Judy and Lynn are two of the nicest people God put on this good earth. Warm and wonderful and honest and well-meaning people, yet smart progressive and loving. If you’re thinking at all about personal coaching there is no one, no one better than my Dr. Judy.” And if you want to learn about nursing and/or holistic medicine, google Lynn Keegan. Buy one of her many books. And stay tuned, there’s more to come from all of us.
