Pelican Perseverance Positively Pays Off

Don’t you just love it when your brain goes, “Huh?” or “What the heck…?” As you spy something you have never seen before.
I was working on my new Coaching Positivity website when I took a break. It was now 8 a.m. and I had been at it since 2:30 a.m., happily putting insomnia to good use. I walked over to our lovely terrace overlooking Banderas Bay here in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Yep, I work in a fantastic, lush tropical, jungle spot with a heavenly, mountainous backdrop.
I was thinking how grateful I shall be when the desk I am having made finally arrives. (Then I can look at the bay as I work.) As I do many times a day, I glanced over the railing and couldn’t believe my eyes.
Way down below, near Los Muertos Pier, I saw an unexpected, jaw-dropping nature show so spectacular I stood there in awe. I picked up my binoculars for a closer perusal.
Pelicans, at least of 40 of them, were entertaining the pier-standing crowd. To everyone’s Sunday morning delight, they were dive-bombing the bay from about 30-40 feet up. No fear, at lightening speed, one after the other, looking like choreographed fine-feathered friends fireworks, they dove in droves!
Over and over they blasted into the water, waiting to tuck in their stealthy wings at the last possible second. Bang! Splash! Flying high, they beak-dove yet again. This show went on for about 15 minutes. And each time the trusty pelicans flew higher up before they dove.
It hit me. Did that take Courage? Perseverance? Planning? There had to have been a school of fish they could focus on and target. Even when they came up empty-beaked, they kept on eye-balling their goal.
Remember that old kids’ poem?
“What a wonderful bird is the pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belly can.
And I don’t know how the hell he can!”
So what is your take away lesson in positivity?
