What’s Your Pet Peeve Phrase?

What’s Your Pet Peeve Phrase?

Do you have a pet peeve phrase? A phrase that for some reason always irritates you or makes you shutter when you hear it? Like someone is rubbing your eyebrows backwards.

I woke up this morning with my bug-boo-phrase rattling around in my brain. “It is what it is.” Yuck! But why does it bug me? Why do I give it the power to upset me?

Then my curiosity and critical thinking strengths kicked in. I’ve never asked myself exactly what it is about my nagging phrase that sticks in my crawl.

Then the lightening bolt.

I am an upbeat psychologist and life coach. I believe and absolutely know you have gigantic potential and capabilities to transform your life. Total acceptance of what is without challenging yourself to change is boring and gives you no hope to go for the gold.

Why not tap into your creativity, sprinkle in some motivational zest, and curiously look for ways to make their life better. Your best self awaits! Or do you settle for your life and say, “Oh, well?”

Sink or swim? Optimism or pessimism?

What if you focus on ways to make what is better for yourself? Don’t get me wrong, acceptance can be appropriate. I accept that I am 5′ 1″. But I wouldn’t accept that I couldn’t play college basketball. It took some courage, and maybe a chunk of stupidity, I played. Yep, I got slammed. But I did it because I wanted to. I was grateful for the opportunity. and grateful to have played.

What’s your pet peeve phrase? How can you challenge it by shining a light on your strengths?

Cool…Something just bubbled up. Pet peeve has two p’s. So does Positive Psychology.

What if every time your pet peeve phrase rears its haughty head, you think of me patting you on your back celebrating you for using your strengths?

Go ahead, stare down that phrase. Kindly make friends with it, then send it on its way. You have your treasure chest of positive psychology “positivity gems” to put on and admire instead.
