It’s How You Breathe

It’s How You Breathe

Do you have a routine when you get up in the morning? I don’t mean the usual stuff like brushing your teeth, but something you love to experience?

I get up in the morning thinking. Then my brain races through what projects I plan and choose to do. Note that word, “Choose.” Then comes the fun.

I open the patio door, turn on the outdoor lights and let the flowers be my friends. After viewing my vibrant vistas, I close my eyes and listen. My little nesting warbling vireo birds don’t disappoint. We have several bird houses, and these watchdogs in the bird world seem familiar with my routine. They break out in song for my pleasure. I feel Lake Michigan’s wind upon my face. I suck it in like our resident hummingbirds noshing nectar at their feeders. Deep sigh. Life is full of stuff to savor.

Every morning, I think about Mom, hoping she had a good night. Wisconsin and Deleware are neighboring states in my mind. I notice my solar dragonfly changing colors and stand there mesmerized like a two year old seeing her first kaleidoscope. Silently sipping some  of my espresso with white chocolate mocha creamer, I ask myself “What else can I savor this morning?” Music!

I click on Five For Fighting’s John Ondrasik’s album, Slice. The very first song, Augie Nieto, hit me like a ton of bricks. About a guy who lives life happier than ever after a diagnosis of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Tears well up, remembering the patients and friends I have had with this disease. Bittersweet, but uplifting lyrics, “It’s not the breaths you take, it’s how you breathe.” Sheer gratitude grazes in my mind. Loving life, I am so blessed.

How about you?
Do you take a moment for yourself when you get up?
Or maybe another time of the day?

Have a routine that plasters a grin? I so hope you are loving the life you’re in. I raise my creamer-spiked coffee in your honor. It’s not good to drink alone.
