Closet Coat Caper

Closet Coat Caper

I’d just had 8 hours of clients in a row and attended a mastermind study group. Whew! But I am used to busy days. And I love the people I coach. I was ready for a treat. Maybe a walk around the garden. I needed to make a run to the store, but really didn’t feel like it. Instead, I decided to get a wedding gift ready.

That’s when all hell broke loose.

I slid open the foyer double closet to get the wrapping paper. (And wasn’t I proud of myself that I was actually wrapping it and not putting it in a gift bag!) But the doors wouldn’t slide. Then reality smacked me right between my eyes. Blame it!

Now I know this kind of stuff happens to everyone, but wouldn’t you know I had cleaned out this closet only a couple weeks ago. The brackets holding up all our winter coats, saved Christmas cards and other stuff no way I could get rid of, came unbolted. The walls of the Krings’ Jericho came crashing down. Well, at least the pole holding everything and the shelf above it.

I had been so proud to have re-arranged Ken’s stuff on one end and mine on the other. I had arranged all the gift bags into sizes and themes and hung them on separate hangers. Now a mish-mash colorful mess. Sigh. Then for some unknown reason, as if the closet was going ha-ha-ha, the smaller of the two vacuum cleaners turned on! No kidding. Like the closet gremlin was there and winning. It sounds funny now, but I could have wrapped the cord around it and choked it! Luckily was Ken was home. Between the two of us, we finally figured how to get the re-chargeable contraption silenced.

Reframe to positivity time! Perspective here. I am embarrassed to tell you how many coats were hanging in up in the closest, now on the floor or halfway there. Ski gear, Harley boots and coats, and other “But I love that!” stuff we hadn’t worn in years. Son Jason was going to reap the rewards as he and Ken wear the same size give or take. Salvation Army and St. Vincent’s would have a field day, too.

I told Ken the fallen pole was a Godsend. I had been wanting to give away those clothes for years. Now I can feel the closet breathing a sigh of relief and happiness for all the folks this winter who will be warm. On a roll, we weeded out the back door closest, too. A clean sweep!

Looking back, I should have taken a photo of the previously cherished stuff. Nah…then I might still miss it. Out of sight, out of mind.

So what’s in your closet that needs to go bye bye and would make someone else happy?

Think of how much lighter you’ll feel when you can see space between your stuff. Not to mention your heart when you know you gave a gift to someone else.

Not that you aren’t all heart, anyway.
I know you are!
