Honoring The Special Men In Our Lives

© 2010 Dr. Judy Krings

Happy Father’s Day! This is an occasion to express your gratitude to your dad, step-dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, and special “father figures” for all their love and support. Don’t forget those brothers and special uncles!

Memorial Day Gratitude

My dad and his three of his brothers served in WWII. I had the privilege to work for the US Army in Germany during the Vietnam era. One of my greatest honors was to adopt a Marine platoon fighting for our freedom in Iraq.

Ever get an email from a guy getting bombed while typing to you from a keyboard with half the keys missing? Just hoping you would be there? Life-changing appreciation.

God bless our troops. Freedom comes at an enormous price. Courage and valor are special strengths these guys and gals harness every day.

Gratitude for all of those who serve our country?
Understatement.

The Porky Pigs’ Pot Of Gold

On our way to visit the two pot-bellied pigs, there is a visit to the kennel and a stop to feed the three whinnying horses. Apples are the horses’ tasty treat. We also give them a verbal warning that we will be back for a ride after the pigs are fed.
We march toward the kennel where Peanut, Chloe, Opus, and Hobbs are waiting. Squirt is running free, and so is one other pup whose name eludes me. The mighty mutts herald our arrival with quite a cacophony of howls, barks, and “Who the heck are you?” We make friends anyway. “Aunt Annie” comes along with the porky pigs’ pot of gold…watermelons and apples. Much to our dismay, “Aunt Annie” has to use some mighty muscle nudging to eject them from their hot hooch. Now no offense, but looking at them, we are sure they will gobble up the goodies ASAP. Ha! The have the last oink. They slowly trudge right into their private swimming pool. Not to be outdone by “Aunt Annie’s” double pond, they sit down in theirs. Plop! They snort, “Thank you very much, but we would rather eat later!”. The sun is too sinister. With indifference, they waddle past the tempting watermelon. “Aunt Annie”-dug-ditch water wins.

Bouncing Bobbers

What kid wouldn’t love catching blue gills after their fishing rod was barely cast into the inviting clear water so cleverly colored by biodegradable aqua dye? In the water a scant few minutes, the bobber is bouncing under the water, quick as a wink. Even 60 year old Grammy Judy is squealing with delight. OK, so what if she is a whuss. Annie, with a little diligent teasing, puts worms on the line. And what if the line gets tangled because Grammy is winding the line in her usual left-handed backward manner. Problem-solving, thoughtful, ever-thinking “Aunt Annie” retrieves a left-handed fishing rod! Grammy is in heaven hauling up her you-would-have-thought-it-was-a-marlin prized bluegill bounty. She loves it as “Aunt Annie” lovingly rescues each fish and launches them back into their floating freedoms. Funny how those bluegills come right up to the shore as if to tease, “You can’t catch me!”. Oh, but we did!
Speaking of freedom, the little minnows have it made, their tiny mouths protected from all those big shiny hooks. You can almost hear them traveling in their collective crowd, cajoling the bluegills, “We may be tiny weeny, but we own this pond!”
