7 Character Strengths Tips to Well-Being and How To Pay It Forward

© 2011 Dr. Judy Krings

Want to live positive psychology “the good life?” Then you need to identify and
empower your 24 character strengths to anchor well-being. Time to enrich your
life with less work and more play!

What Does Positive Psychology Mean To You?

Simply defined, as one client said to me the other day, “Before coaching, I asked
myself, “Is this all there is? I just want to be happier. When I asked her what
happier looked like to her, her light bulb moment flashed! “I want a good life.
I want more fun. I want more time for myself and time to go to volunteer and
make the world better.” BINGO! Then and there she set goals to achieve a more
upbeat and fulfilling life.

Positive psychology harvests all your sparkling facets. You define what a
“good person” means to you. You dive into your strengths and virtues. Want
to know a few?  Capacity to love and be loved, courage, curiosity, forgiveness,
tenacity, gratitude, social intelligence
, and critical thinking. At the community
level: civility, altruism, work ethics, tolerance, and nurturance.

Here are 7 tips to help you understand your strengths, win at well-being, and
pay your wisdom forward:

1. Expand and open your mind to learning new perspectives and gain
mind-expanding personal insights
. Take the Values in Action Survey (VIA)
at www.viacharacter.org. Find your strengths. Remember none is better than
another. The top 5 are called your Signature Strengths as you may use these more
often. And don’t be shocked if they don’t seem to fit. My first one is Appreciation
of
Beauty and Excellence. When I saw this I thought. “How shallow is that! Why
couldn’t I have had a ‘good’ one like courage?” Then it hit me. No matter how bad
my day seemed, if I paused to look at art and nature, I could cope with just about
anything. I was sold on strengths then and there.

2. Feel your optimism and resilience expand as you understand your
strengths lead you to well-being.
When life is forcing you to eat a crap
sandwich, look to your strengths. For instance, if you tell yourself, “Nobody
listens to me!”, ask yourself, “Am I a good listener? Am I expecting too much?”
Ask yourself, “Which strength do I choose to use to get people to listen?” Perhaps
its courage to ask others if they would please sit awhile and hear you out.

Look at your 24 strengths as treats you give yourself. Like a tasty hot fudge sundae
with 24 toasted pecans on top. YUMMY. Strengths sweeten your lifeand change
your perspectives.

3. Savor how strengths help you with direction and decision-making.
Maybe you need to call upon your patience strength to deal with a difficult boss
or an unhappy partner. Maybe you need to look your persistence strength in the
eye to empower you to get a job done.

4. Capture your confidence strength.  Know it is a by-product of action.
Use your strengths in a planned and organized way. Add other strengths like
optimism to make your journey easier. Be grateful to yourself and others who
have helped you along the way.

5. Generate zest as you achieve your very best! Celebrate your victories.
Feel your positive energy pump you up as you win at well-being. It’s OK to be
humble, but celebrating success leads to more happiness.

6. Breathe in fulfillment and meaning when you engage your strengths,
especially when your goals look difficult
. Pile on positivity every time you
strap on a strength. Want more fun? Get a partner to help cheer and mentor you.
Remind yourself of how joyful you will feel whenyou run across the finish line.

7. Applaud your mindful awareness.  Know your strengths guide your
way through life
. Pull your strengths out of our quiver. Be patient and hopeful
as you pull back your strength arrows. Shoot their positivity to help you hit the
bull’s eye. Want to make this fun? Draw a target on a piece of paper. Write your 24
strengths inside your target. Get creative. Let your inner kid out to play. Throw a
dart (careful with your aim!) and see which strength you nailed. Challenge yourself
to use that strength for a day.

Remember if you want to achieve something get out your VIA results and take a
gander at which strength the best serve you. Really stop and you will see them
jump right out at you. You might also do what I do. Memorize your top strengths.
Print out your list of 24 so you can grab it at a weak moment when you need some
help move you forward. They are one terrific life vest, so always kept them close
to your chest!

If you operate in the business world, check out the Gallop StrengthsFinders2
assessment. Engaging strengths at work helps you become a better leader,
enhances skills, energizes your performance.

Think about your favorite strengths stories? I especially love when you tell me
you piggy backed strengths and use a whole constellation of them at once. Or when
you have fun with your strengths and make up a new one designed especially for
you. That’s really fun! One if mine id “Gardenator”. Why? When I am in my garden,
my mind roams free and gives rise to creativity!

And speaking of gardening, Mom and Ken burst blissfully blossomed at Mom’s
93rd birthday party last week.
I’d love to hear your strengths stories, so put a smile on my face and leave
me some comments.

“Oops! Have You Dialed 911 By Mistake?!”

© 2011 Dr. Judy Krings

Do you believe things happened for a reason? I do. Wait till you hear this one.

God willing and Mom staying healthy, two friends and I are soon off to Nepal
and Tibet.  I can’t wait to see my Nepalese adopted son, Hari, and his family.

Bummer is having a 11-hour overnight layover in New Delhi, India, with very
few hotels nearby. My travel partner, Kim, learned of sleeping pods at the
airport. Cool contraptions equipped with Wifi, TV, a cot and mini frig. She
sent me the link, but the information was sketchy. It was pull my hair out time.
My computer wasn’t my friend. But, Ah Ha!

I scouted out an information # to call. Goody. I dialed the number. Imagine
my shock whenmy “Oh no!” ears heard, “Manitowoc Police. You dialed 911.
What is your emergency?” OMG!  Then it hit me. The overseas first #’s were
91-124. The dispatcher was not a happy camper. I apologized profusely.
I begged her not to waste taxpayers’ money and send a squad car, but she
had her rules. Egg on my face big time.

But that’s when the fun began. As the officer exited his police car, a smile of
recognition rapidly spread across our faces. We had met years before.
“Hey, Jason Wilterdink!” We chatted and compared notes. He has just published
a book, too, “Healthy Lifestyles for Law Enforcement.” Stress kills cops, and
Jason shoots them a round of stress management techniques. I talked about
my new book,”Photo Adventures in Cuba ~ Unlock Your Power of Positivity.”
(http://www.coachingpositivity.com). I told him about the free Values in
Action Survey (VIA) coaching positivity strengths. I suggested he use it to
help the police officers he instructs.

Was I embarrassed? You bet. But look what ensued. A win-win.

Generous friend, Annie, blessed me with these lovely brown eggs, the very first
eggs her new hens laid. A little cream cheese added more savor to the flavor.
Yummy!

When was the last time you had egg on your face but ended up scrambling
to share a few bites?

Is that you I see with a plan to hug a cop?  Why not tell him/her you
appreciate their service?

It’s Never Too Late to Appreciate

© 2011 Dr. Judy Krings

If you stop and reflect on who is a person who has helped you move
forward in your career, whose face pops up? Who fills up your gratitude balloon?

In coaching I often ask clients these questions. I ask them to write a letter to
or visit this person and express their gratitude. It is time to put my money
where my mouth is.

I was coaching a young man for the first time the other day, and instantaneously
I felt an immediate positive connection. After the call ended, I sat down with
myself to ponder my positivity. My sensorium snapped to attention. I got it! This
client’s melodic, velvet vocal chords reminded me of the best radio/TV/ media
producer on the planet, Jon Quick, Indianapolis, IN.

Humble Jon wouldn’t tell you, but for years when he was a top dog at EMMIS
radio corp, before he pioneered his own ABSOLUTEMAX! public relations, media,
and branding company, and his talent developing Q Consulting Guys companies,
he was #1 in his radio market.

Jon took my midget talent, sweetly busted my chops producing me, and elevated
me from local radio to a Chicago-based nationally syndicated radio show. This
was before everyone and his brother was doing Internet radio. Not that I am
knocking that, the more the merrier!

We have shared thousands of emails and calls. Jon is still at the top of my
cherished best male friends list; a kind, generous, creative genius. We still “share”
a different flavor coffee every Sunday morning. It doesn’t matter we’ve never met
in person. We know, trust, and delight each other.

Jon is a media marketing star, but I admire most, Jon, the man. His integrity,
compassion, and humor shine. He boosted my career in countless ways, and
better yet, we had fun, and still do.

If it weren’t for Jon’s motivational writing wisdom, I know I would never have
written my new book, “Photo Adventures in Cuba ~ Unlock Your Power of Positivity.”

So take this brand, Jon…

Tattoo an A+ on your forehead. Tell them Judy did it in your sleep! I would if I
could. You are a gem of a man whose prisms of positivity propelled me to learn
more than I would have ever dreamed! I am and will be forever grateful to you.

Can you feel my joy? I should have thanked Jon sooner, but I am glad I did now.
It’s never too late to celebrate a person who helped you take the curve that
changed your life. “Advice that’s nice”. Thank you, Jon! Whose life will you change
today by telling them they mattered?

Full-time Employment and Flying High!

© 2011 Dr. Judy Krings

My old photo is from 2009, but I couldn’t resist! When is the last time
you were flying this high? I was at the Mentor Coach Conference in Sedona,
when my dream to fly in a bi-plane took wing! Scary as hell, but I did it.

The “youngins” photo was taken a few days ago. I asked son
Sean to have someone snap a fun photo of his buddies.
He came through! Here’s the fun back story.

A recent phone call from my son Sean’s girlfriend,
Heidi, brought back the same emotion. Full throttle joy.
She was touching base to see how Ken’s eye surgery went
and how my Mom was faring. Sweet! Next, Sean’s friends,
Thad and Zak grabbed the phone and filled me in with how their
lives were panning out. Tenacious Thad has a technical job he
enjoys with a new challenge every day.

Zak is banking an upcoming job interview will strike a vane of
full time employment gold. “It’s not my dream job, but it’s a job,
and I can watch out for another.” Great critical thinking!

That’s when I had an epiphany. I “saw” Zak speaking in front of many people,
like a Tony Robbins moment. His velvet voice rang true. Clear as a bell.
The job he is interviewing for has nothing to do with speaking. I asked him
what his college major had been. Yep,public speaking and communications.
I “know” he will be doing just that one of these days. Strangely, I then visioned
a panther stalking his prey. I told Zak (these kids already know I’m weird!)
piped up with, “Patience and Pounce…Eureka! That’s me!”

Can you feel the hope and optimism in these “kids” ages 23-31?
Resilience, perseverance, and gratitude blipping on their radar screens.
I remember not long ago when Sean called us thrilled to have scored a
new job with full medical and dental benefits as well as a stellar
retirement program. Music to our ears.

What opportunity is flying past you?
What might happen if you went full throttle and flew with a new idea?
Hey…There’s room in the jump seat. Wanna go flying with me?
Nothing like great friends. Sharing is caring.

What New Will You Do at 92?

© 2011 Dr. Judy Krings

When was the last time you allowed your humor to take center stage?
I know this photo isn’t pristine, but the message Mom brings to you is.
Her joy is as clear as a spring fed glacier lake.
Are you curious? Why did she shock me and stick out her tongue?
Can you see me cracking up at the bottom?

This was Mom’s first Skype call! She was so excited.
I never dreamed she’d have such fun. Better yet, for some reason
she can hear me better with her cochlear implant than she can on
the telephone, always a challenge. Another win win with a grin.

Now you know the truth. Mom’s funny bone tickles me.
That’s how my naughtiness took root.
Mom wanted me to tell you, “Never give up!”

So what do you need to let go of to make a decision to try something new?
To push yourself past what you think you are able to do.
What do YOU want to do at 92?
