Who would think such small manila envelop could bring such joyful anticipation? l was jaw-dropping excited when my questioning eyes noticed foreign handwriting and realized who it was from. I actually didn’t open it for a day. An unexpected thrill, I needed to value and savor it.
To hold it, admire its labels, and appreciate its journey from Kathmandu, Nepal to Manitowoc, WI. So I waited. That emotionally charged package deserved my full in the FLOW attention. That’s how much I treasured it. It mattered not what was in the package, just getting the heartfelt gift…That’s what mattered. Because it came from my adopted Nepalese son, Hari, 24, and his family. It’s treasure? My eyes feasted as I beheld the generously chosen, beautiful treasures, each artful gift melted my heart. My grateful fingertips caressed the soft, silky scarves as I admired the calendar’s unbelievably stunning scenery. Pure joy.
Hari works for an adventure travel agency in Nepal. He treks and works in the office. I was going the International Appreciative Inquiry Conference in Nepal last fall. Sadly, Mom’s vertigo got the best of her, she fell, and assisted living became her reality. I cancelled my fall trip to Nepal, but not my relationship with Hari! Instead, he kindly kept emailing and calling me asking how she was. Hari is honest authenticity personified. His gentle spirit soars. He is not a man of means, but he means everything to me.
Did you ever notice opportunity often comes from despair? Hari’s gracious gift of fun friendship, and that of his whole family for that matter, has bestowed upon me rainbows of Himalayan love.
Maybe I didn’t get to compare Nepal photos with Mom, her trip to Nepal almost 40 years ago. What I have gotten is an up close and person view of Nepal’s real heart. Yes, Nepal’s topography is stunningly spectacular, But it doesn’t hold a candle to my view into Hari’s poetic soul. He worries about his English, though he writes like an angel. His verses of kindness fall gently like unique snowflakes. Funny I used that analogy, as he is out trekking in the snow today.
I can remember the first time we saw each other on Skype. I had on my old ratty housecoat, no make up, and I’m surprised I didn’t scare him off! Gleefully, he kept covering his eyes in disbelief. Or was it he couldn’t take seeing my face? I’m old enough to be his grandmother, yet there we were, goggling like two kids at a slumber party. I know neither of us will ever forget it.
Want to add sweetness, spice, and belongingness to your life?
Can you imagine the privilege of curiously looking into someone else’s world in splendid awe?
What are you waiting for?
Be safe, Hari. Watch those crevices. And when you look up at the sky, know the same moon is shining down on both of us.
Sharing is caring, remember?
