7 Tips to Fire Up The Adventurer in You and Banish Fear, Too!

Are you a chicken? Is exploring your soul scary?
Or are you already a learner or seeker?

No time like the present to zestfully find out about yourself and what makes you tick? Notice I said “tick” but maybe you would like to discover why you get ticked off, too!

What does it take for you to sit a spell with yourself? To get real what you really WANT your life to look like from the inside out. To kick fearfulness to the curb. To become an explorer in your own life. To pack courage in your parachute and know you will land safely.

How about a coaching challenge. Cool ways for you to face your fears, look at them square in the eyes and yell, “Bring it on!” Even the scary stuff!

First, you need to get the cobwebs out of your brain. Get clear. Pinpoint exactly what you want to conquer. No one foot nailed down going around in a circle. I acted this out with a client this week, and he almost peed his pants laughing at me. Then he told me that was exactly what he was doing. His fearful brain and negative self-talk would not let him proceed. He didn’t have the right hammer to remove the nail to march forward, but he does now. And it’s your turn now!

Here are the 7 tips you need, your personalized hammer, to let your inner adventurer fly to the place where curiosity supplants fear:

1. Know where to start ~ Know your passions. Not sure? Then list 5 times in your life you were sublimely happy. What were you doing and feeling? What blows up your energy balloon? Noted curiosity researcher, Dr. Todd Kashdan, in his acclaimed book, Curious?, suggests you visit your local bookstore and see what sections intrigue you. If like photography, how could you challenge yourself? Get the new camera you have always wanted, take photos in a new place, or take a class. Set your inner explorer free!

2. Relax and imagine it ~ Close your eyes and visualize what you want. Paint a mental picture in your mind. Believe: ” I DO THIS!”. Fantasize what you want and there will be a greater likelihood you will check this off your bucket list. It may be as simple as cooking a new recipe or as challenging as climbing Mt. Ranier. What you focus on grows. Research indicates using “outcome simulation” makes it more likely you will achieve your goals. Fear or no fear. Think it, write it down, and keep picturing it in your mind until you do it. And get this. The more difficult it is, within reason, of course, the more likely you are to achieve it, according to esteemed motivational researcher, Dr. Heidi Halvorson.

3. Get expert advice ~ After you pinpoint your desired adventure, do fun homework. Scout the Internet, books, and people who have already accomplished your dream. Plunge into their fascinating stories. Be like a bird dog and hunt down how they did it. What flexible, creative strategies can you learn from them? Be specific. Get directions. Know before you go. Expect to fall down and scrape you knee. That is part of the fun of rock climbing and cycling. You pay to play and find joy along the way. Getting to the peak of your life’s desires…Ahhh!

4. Share your explorer plan ~ John Donne said, “No man is an island”. Think about your heading to a brave new world like Columbus. Can you imagine the discussion he had with his wife before he went? “Dear, I am headed off to…well…I hope the Spice Islands, but to tell you the truth, I might fall off the edge of the earth.” Any new endeavor is risky. To lessen fear, share you dream plans with others. Heck, you can even develop a “dream team” and share each others’ imaginations and goals. Shared support. You need encouragement from others who will add to your own energy, especially when roadblocks seem to get in your way.

5. Think big and little ~ OK. You have your dream blueprint in front of you. Maybe you are going to plan a trip to Bali. You have imagined in your brain. You see yourself on the beach. You have researched all the side trips you want to make. You began a vacation fund. You have told friends you WILL be accomplishing this by a set date. Now what? Here’s a fun side trip. You learn to develop a new Mindset every day about little things in life. Why? According to Dr. Kashdan, “Finding novel sensations in the everyday hits a reset button”. How? By changing your daily routine. Go to a new coffee shop. Take a different way to work, jog in a new location. In this manner, you put your brain on alert and exercise it. Doing this gives more muscle power to your big Bali trip. And it’s fun! Conscious awareness of nuance puts your bran in sharper focus. Cool!

6. Embrace the pain ~ Allow yourself to fail, feel the fear, get off track, but know this is normal. For example, you are ready to go to Nepal, and your Mom gets sick. I know this one! But dear Mom’s are worth putting the skidders on your almost there explorations. Life intervenes with stuff, and you need to acknowledge it. You have to postpone your trip. Big deal. Your world does not end. It morphs. It’s life. So blame what! Keep your dream, just postpone it. Yes, you might feel uneasy feelings, but it is these scrapes and bruises that add to your resilience. Maybe you want to run a marathon and pull a muscle. It hurts like hell and you are sore, but know you will another marathon. No pain no gain many times while you explore. Even scars can be positive reminders of your relentlessly moving forward. Smile and think of the stories you have to tell.

7. Nix the naysayers ~ Your own fearful negative self talk as well as the Doubting Thomases who want to rain on your parade. Think of Mother Theresa when everyone told her she could not feed thousands of starving people. Tenaciously, (and you sure as heck need to stretch your tenacity muscle to be an intrepid explorer) she marched on. She had a vision. She made plans. She made them happen. She dodged bullets on so many levels. Stick to your guns. Ask for the support you need. Go for it!

Did you have fun closing your eyes thinking about the fabulous adventures waiting to appear on your radar screen? How many dreams did you add for Bucket List?

There’s no better time than now. “It’s your life, live it well!” my old radio mantra. Hope you included me in your dreams and plans. Your did read what I said about side kicks adding to your adventure, right ;)

Woodstock’s Tragic St. Patrick’s Day Tale

Were you ever cheery as all get out, sunshine shooting out your every pore,
then “WHAM!”? Do you remember Woodstock, cartoon character Charlie
Brown’s sweet-tweet birdie buddy?

It wasn’t Woodstock’s fault. He was full of green positivity and ready to
wing his way to a wonderful St Patrick’s Day jungle perch.  But that is
when it happened!

We were looking around the condo wanting to find just the right spot for
our photo op. Did he want to sit in a big colorful green plant? Or was a comfy
green patio chair good enough? I got up from my chair… Then OMG despair!
We both looked down as Woodstock and I moved away from my computer desk.
That’s when spotted him…or maybe it was a her.  A green gecko was lying there
just under the pillow I use for my feet. The gecko wasn’t moving, and I knew he/she
was too small for CPR! I had killed it. No more little bugs for that poor little green
soul; all because my size 7N foot squashed his/her little cute tush!

Yes, I felt green remorse. I like the helpful bug-eating geckos. I was glad GEICO
was not around to see my dastardly deed.  Woodstock and I bowed our heads in
prayer. And hero Ken came and rescued me. He picked up the poor little critter
and sent him to greener valleys.

Woodstock, with his wit, suggested we should salute GG (Greenie the Gecko; He’s
only been gone a few minutes, but he already earned a nickname. Nice tribute,
Woodie!) We should remember him/her with some St. Paddy’s Day revelry.
Humor IS one of Woodstock’s top strengths.

So in memory of GG, we list some GREEN phrases for you to savor. (After you tip
your hat to GG, of course!) Here are a few green phrases with a positive psychology
application retort! Turn green into strengths’ gold.

~ “Green with envy.” Why not Open-mindedly share the person’s happiness instead?

~ “Green eggs and ham.”  Yummy Creativity at it’s tasty best! Share and be Fair to
another hungry soul!

~ “Green as a newbie.”  Innocence is Honesty, a great strength. Add Love of
Learning, and watch the newbie soar!

~ “Green apples’ sour.” Everyone winces at a tart situation. What if you
Optimistically made a delicious pie?

~ “Green cash.” What if you Generously shared your good fortune and
surprised  someone with a Kindness?

~ “Green, green grass of home.” How can you use Love, Leadership and
Teamwork to add joy to your family’s day?

~ “Green sleeves.”  Are you old enough to remember Mr. Greensleeves and
his Zestful, Fun, Industrious projects?

~ “Grass is greener.”  Can’t looks be deceiving? What if you were Grateful for
the grass  in your own front yard?

See how many green phrases you can generate. What strengths pop up like a
four  leaf  clover you searched to find?  This ain’t no Blarney…May your
St. Patrick’s Day  be filled  with Irish laughter and twinkling chutzpa!
Don’t forget the green beer!

Is that you I see putting on your green tap dance shoes getting ready to jig?
I loved how you dyed your hair green today!

It only takes a tiny bit of green, $9.99 to be exact, for you to see

Turquoise Runs Rings Around Resilience

Has your life ever been hi-jacked? Let me tell you a true story.
It began 4 years ago. How would you feel if this happened to you?

What if you were 89 years old and in one fell swoop lost your identity
as you had known it? You were whisked off to an assisted living center,
your broken ankle in a cast, your butt in a wheelchair, and deaf because
no one remembered to bring along your cochlear implant? Your daughter
is desperately trying to get a plane flight to come and look after you.
Shockingly quick, within a matter of days per your wishes, your house is
sold for a low ball price. You will never see the home you designed and
built 50 years ago. No saying good-bye to your possessions. Never get to
water your precious plants in your beloved greenhouse. No one last time.
Tough to swallow, but at least you rationalize your house was sold. That’s
how fast life locked the door to my Mom’s reality.

Resilience. Pluck. Awareness and acceptance. They all took time.
But her 90th birthday surprise a month later really perked her up.
Connections. Belonging. Tenacity to heal. Petting her sweet Scottie
dog, Katie, once in awhile, made life worth living again. As you know,
Mom is now 93, out of assisted living, and as she put it, “Living like a
princess, no make that a queen!” at Cathy and Bill’s home in Delaware.
She’s the one with two dogs in her lap with 3 larger pups vying for attention.

But one small detail was lacking, not that Mom would ever complain.
Mom’s hands have been knotted and swollen by arthritis for years.
She missed wearing a ring, but she didn’t want me to buy her new ones nor
to have her rings sized larger. But one day a few months ago, she was
philosophically saying she did miss wearing a ring, but she knew none would fit.

You know me; I had a light bulb moment. On my next flight home, I took all
her rings. I also went to an antique shop and bought 3 I thought might fit.
Full of hope, off to Delaware I flew, rings tucked safely in my purse along
with the whole top tray of her old jewelry box.

To see Mom’s face light up when she saw those rings was worth a million bucks.
With vigor and hope in her heart, she delightedly tried on every one. To her
surprise, several fit. Talk about joy! I was praying her 30 year old watch would
work, too, if I could find a battery. Eureka! I lucked out. That old turquoise
time piece kindly began tick-tocking away.

I am in my 6th decade, and it never ceases to amaze me how every time I
visit Mom, I learn something new about life. To savor. To let go of regrets.
To look for the good. To appreciate EVERYTHING! Mom is the poster girl
for living positive psychology and living her best life now.

Turquoise blue like the azure seas of the Pacific…I look down upon this beauty
ever day from our jungle perch here in Puerto Vallarta.  Everyday I think of
Mom wearing her rings and watch.

What has been your toughest life challenge?
Which strengths became your life preserver?
Which ones plastered a smile upon your face again?
Courage, love of learning, forgiveness? What else?

No matter what, you have 24 strengths to choose from everyday to feather
your nest.  Time to soar to new heights. Just like Mom.Did you remember
I wrote a strengths book dedicated to her?

Want to review your strengths and see how to make them work for you?
You can see fun and picturesque 2-page stories in my new book.
